Learn About Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic autoimmune condition involving the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, with onset typically seen in teenagers and young adults. While incurable, various treatments can reduce and manage symptoms. Risk factors include recurring infections, smoking, and use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).

The two common disease state classifications of IBD are:

Ulcerative Colitis

Characterized by mucosal inflammation of the colon and possibly the lower large intestines. It affects 700,000 Americans with 46% of cases classified as moderate to severe.

Crohn’s Disease

Similar to Ulcerative Colitis, however, inflammation can occur anywhere along the GI tract and appear in deeper portions of the tissue. Crohn’s Disease affects 500,000 Americans.

IBD Treatment

Various medications are available to treat IBD. Current treatments can be very effective and have reduced mortality to less than one percent. Medications range from oral therapies to injectable medications that alter the course of the disease and/or control symptoms. Due to the localized nature of the infection in the colon, surgery is a valid treatment option for Ulcerative Colitis. Surgery is less effective in treating Crohn’s because the inflammation is generally not limited to one area of the GI tract.
